Why Do Muscles Twitch?

For the last week or so, the muscles on my left side have been twitching for a duration of a few minutes. One day it was my deltoid, one day my lat, even before I went on stage, my tricep was throwing a fit. Sometimes my eyelid twitches too.

Why does this happen?

There’s many possible causes to muscle twitching. They include:

  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Too much caffeine (impossible!!)
  • Poor diet
  • Exercise (usually after) – or too much exercise
  • Medication side effect

Usually, it’s nothing to worry about, and the twitching will go away in a few days. Eyelid, calf, and thumb twitches specifically are quite typical, and are due to stress and anxiety.

However, you may want to contact a doctor if any of these things apply to your uncontrollable spasming:

  • Twitch won’t go away
  • Weakness, tingling, numbing in area of muscle twitching
  • Muscle size is visibly shrinking

You don’t have to do much to fix this, as most muscle twitching will go away on it’s own. But if you want to make sure you’re doing everything for the health of your body, consider adjusting your sleep, amount of exercise, caffeine intake, and magnesium.

Some magnesium-rich foods include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, wheat bran, bananas, avocados, beans, dark chocolate, etc.

Also, cannabis has anecdotally alleviated these muscle spasm symptoms… interesting.
